When Hayoun was young, he would go to stamp-collector conventions with his grandfather who was constantly searching for an Abdel Wahab stamp released in 1991. Recently, Hayoun searched for this stamp online and purchased two, one for himself and one that he subsequently painted into the pocket of his grandfather. This painting shows Hayoun’s grandfather not only with this stamp, but with Abdel Wahab himself in the beloved homeland of Alexandria surrounded by his favourite cakes.

Hayoun’s work celebrates the revolutionary act of finding joy in the face of despair and oppression. His paintings scramble time: moments from the artist's life and those he has loved overlap with key events from political, global history so that whimsy and hardship go hand in hand.
