“I fell in love with copper because of its ability to be turquoise and how that references the waters of The Bahamas. To really study ceramics is to understand the history of glaze and that relates to personal history. This turquoise to me symbolises our first introduction to glaze which is through the Egyptians and their use of copper to make this beautiful turquoise glass that we later developed to coat over ceramics. Then that technique cross pollinates with countries in Asia. We learn from them that copper has this ability to be this beautiful ox-blood red…(and) then copper has an ability to be just like the copper penny, as if it’s in its strong metal form. All of those different manifestations can happen within a glaze.”
