This piece is a tribute to the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, who braved torture and death to demand to know the whereabouts of their disappeared children during Argentina’s military dictatorship of the 1970s and 80s. The planes used by the dictatorship to drop bodies into the sea can be seen flying overhead.
The production of harissa is a recurrent symbol of indignation against patriarchy and autocracy. Here harissa graces the table at the heart of the square, where Hayoun’s grandmother sits in solidarity with the women, just as she walks arm in arm with them around the square. Peaked mountains of harissa rise alongside them, dwarfing the buildings of power and the regime they symbolise.
