This depicts one of the early morning immigrant deportation raids I reported on at the start of the last Trump administration. My grandfather is depicted in relatively the same pose as “Stateless,” another painting under consideration for the show. My grandmother sits, producing symbols that in the ancient Aztecan and North African Amazigh cultures mean protection from harm. The people in the window are immigration enforcement agents. The pastry the man is eating is called a “concha,” and it’s a typical Mexican breakfast pastry you find all over LA and Mexico (it’s a seashell-shaped sweat bread you’re meant to dunk in coffee with milk).
