In 2014, Hayoun interviewed Texas Death Row inmate Rodney Reed, a man whom overwhelming evidence shows didn’t commit the murder that led to his conviction in a racially charged trial. They spoke the day before Reed was sentenced to die. His killing was postponed and he remains in prison, pending retrials. Hayoun’s painting depicts not only the incarcerated Reed but the system that continues to steal time from him.
